Hey Oppo’s. My sister ended up buying a 2012 Mazda 3. It’s alright overall but it has rust starting and she wants the rust to stop before it become a typical Midwest car. These photos show where the rust is. Any advice to stopping the rust where it is short of repainting the whole car? Thank you!!!

There are a few spots on the roof like this.

the roof rust looks like it’s from paint nicks which would be fairly easy to fix.   the other ones, however, are at seams which means it’s likely they’re rusting from the inside out.  those are much more involved repairs.

this, meaning impossible (within reason) to repair the items other than the roof. Just a matter of hope for it to last but its just an unsolveable midwest issue.

This. Seams need to be cut and replaced.

Too late for “prevention” in those areas. Would recommend coating the bottom of the car with some stuff so that the important bits dont rust away. That stuff with some rust is just cosmetic but is not really repairable or worth trying to do anything about. It will continue to get worse but such is life in salty places. You could try sanding down and using some rust converter paint or whatever but it will probably look like ass and not really work in the long run. Just drive it into the ground and protect the control arms and frame bits and such.

Definitely worth a proper repair on the roof thing though since that should be a bit of sand the rust away, fill in the hole, and paint. And shouldnt cost too much to make nice there.

The only one that concerns me is the wheel arch rust, that’s a seem weld and a MOFO to repair. My 2006 is about in the same condition but It’s seen 6 montana winters now and I think it maybe beyond any inexpensive fixes at this point.

Roof, door edge, and even the rocker bit could be taken to bare metal, protected, then repainted pretty easily. .

Sadly, that wheel arch seam is not going to get any better..

don’t buy Mazda’s in the mid- west. No matter what she does it’s already started and the only fix is twice the va lue of the car.

I find it funny that people worry about rust when pretty much every vehicle I see from Michigan looks like this Ram, and there doesn’t seem to be an issue.

I have a 2011 3 GT hatch, and stay in the midwest. Wow I have not see stuff like this on my car.. albeit, I do take good care of it, using touchless washes every week, even in the winter.. will she be able to trade it back in for something else?

That’s more of a RAM thing then a Michigan thing in reality.
